Fall 2017 YMCA Basketball, Week 4

ROUGH AROUND THE EDGES VS. FREE BALLIN

A surging Rough Edges squad showed off some new players and new fire power against league powerhouse Free Ballin. John and Arman of the Edges set the tone early with strong drives to the hoop, often taking their defenders with them. They also rebounded well, especially on the offensive side. Jeremy added his sharp shooting with three treys in the first half. Travis got into the mix with rebounds and aggressive defense against the Free Ballin guards to go with 4 points. Gabe Sunshine moved the ball well and knocked down a trey of his own.

Free Ballin came into the game a little short-handed, missing Zack and Kenny, but not enough to slow them down, especially E.J. Ahanotu who was everywhere. He rang up 36 points to go with 19 rebounds! Dereke Bell shared the rebounding load and also threw down a nasty, highlight reel dunk.  Brandon played his usual crafty game with deft moves around his defenders and over the hands of the tall boys down low. He also drew several fouls and converted from the charity stripe. Nick drove to the cup consistently resulting in 14 points. Wil Blades, to show he is no flash-in-the-pan, called his own number twice for long range torpedoes from behind the three-line. The Edges kept it close through the first half but Free Ballin kept the game in hand  throughout the second half. Final score: Free Ballin 84 – 75 Rough Around the Edges.

MORNING GLORY VS. TEAM CALDWELL

Morning Glory took on league leaders Team Caldwell in the second match of the night. Morning Glory improves with each game. This was no exception. They have added big man, Evan, who was a force in the paint. He fearlessly went straight up against Stan and JJ of the Caldwells, showing a nice touch around the basket to finish with 23 points and 10 strong rebounds. The Caldwells decided to apply ball pressure in the first half to see if the Morning Glories would wilt. They didn’t. Abner, in particular, showed off some flashy handles and a nice stroke from both the three-line and the mid-range. He finished with 22  points. The other offensive weapon for the Glories is Joel who managed to find just enough room to get his shot off against the bigger, more athletic Caldwells to finish with team high 25 points. Patrick found his shot in this game knocking down four treys to keep the game close. Joe kept up his steady game around the basket opportunistically laying it up after a nifty pass from Abner.

Mailman subtly directed the Morning Glory squad from the sidelines with some timely personnel moves throughout the game that were Don Nelson-like in their unpredictability.

The Caldwells put on their usual show of force led by AB who put up another exceptional game with 40 points and 8 rebounds. Every time the Glories made a run, AB was there to hit a key shot to keep them at bay. Stan, JJ, David and Lev each contributed points in double figures for a very balanced attack. Hunter also scored 6 in limited minutes for the Caldwells. Final score: Team Caldwell 97 – 86 Morning Glory.
