YMCA Basketball, The Finals!

FREE BALLIN VS. TEAM CALDWELL

It all came down to one game: the reigning champions squaring off against the previous champs. Team Caldwell, the previous champion, was in the unusual position of being the challenger despite the tact that they finished the regular season undefeated. Free Ballin, the current champions, had all but lost their semi-final game until the entire team caught fire in the final 4 minutes. The undefeated versus a surging third seed: in other words, each team came into the contest with some momentum.

This game, though, started about as slow as a game could start. With 4 minutes to go in the half, the score was 17 – 13, hardly a shoot fest. Usually a couple of players will find their range and carry a team along. It just didn’t happen. Instead, Team Caldwell used their size and defensive prowess to grind through Free Ballin. David Dean harassed the Free Ballin ball handlers while JJ, Tall Paul and Hunter locked down the middle for the Caldwells. Brandon, who exploded last week for 42 points, was stymied for most of the game. Nick P managed to knock down a few shots as did Wil Blades and Nick McIlroy, but the Caldwells kept control of the game. Dereke Bell came in for the second half and threw down a couple thunder dunks to motivate his squad but AB, Stan, JJ and David hit enough jumpers and threes to pull away. Final score: Team Caldwell 67 – 47 Free Ballin. Congratulations to Team Caldwell, this season’s champs!

YMCA Basketball, The Semifinals

It’s down to one game, next Wednesday at 8:00 pm. Mark your calendar for the championship game.

Z-TEAM VS. FREE BALLIN

With the playoffs, the level of intensity and the level of play ratchet up. Both teams came in ready for a fight. Z-Team had the advantage early due to the sharpshooting of Paul Reiter and Matt Bryant. Free Ballin countered with some very nifty finishes at the basket by Brandon. Zack also powered his way in the paint for several buckets. Then Nyima got going by breaking the ankles of several of the Free Ballers on his way to layups. He also found his 3-point range. At the half the Zs were up by 7.

In the second half, B. Riley asserted himself both from the 3 line and inside. He also kept Big Zack out of the paint. The X Factor, though, was Free Ballin’s Brandon who refused to let his team falter. Despite being blocked by Paul and picked by Nyima a few times, he was relentless both inside and outside. He finished with a game high 42 points. With 5 minutes left in the game, the Zs held a comfortable 12 point lead, only to watch Wil, Big Zack and Dereke hit crucial treys to close the gap. With the minute to go, Free Ballin had scratched its way to a one point lead. In a mad scramble at the basketball B. Riley grabbed a rebound to tossed up a gimme layup only to watch it hang on the rim and fall out. From then, it was all Free Ballin who will be moving on to the finals. Final score: Free Ballin 77 – 74 Z-Team.

MORNING GLORY VS. TEAM CALDWELL

With basketball, any team can beat any other team on a given night. On this night, Morning Glory gave the favored Team Caldwell a real fight. In a low scoring first half, Mailman was on fire for the Glories. As Paul whipped the ball around the court, he often found the Mailman open in his favorite midrange positions and Gerard knocked all of them down. Jerry was also hitting his shots. For Team Caldwell, Stan, JJ and AB all hit enough shots to allow them to maintain a tiny lead until the end of the half.

In the second half, JJ went to work inside with spin moves and power moves to the bucket. Then he backed up beyond the trey line and hit three after three. As the Caldwells started to pull away, the Glories had a counter. Joel put on a show of his own hitting deep contested threes to finish the with 29 points. Joe was great on the boards while Abner also got in on the scoring action to finish with 9 points.

For the Caldwells, in addition to JJ, Hunter prowled around the basket grabbing offensive rebounds and dropping them in for easy buckets around the basket. He finished with 6 points and 12  rebounds. Stan has his usual solid game with 25 points and 10 rebounds. AB also poured in 23 points.

Fall YMCA Basketball Week 10

This was the last week of the regular season. We take a week off for Christmas. Playoffs begin January 3rd. Happy Holidays!

MORNING GLORY VS. FREE BALLIN

Free Ballin  was feelin’ it, especially Brandon who found the cup for 31 points. He added 7 rebounds and 6 assists to his line for a very good night. Nick was back in form as well finishing with 19 points. In a well balanced attack, Will added 16 including his signature rainbow threes and Zack had a double double for the evening.

Morning Glory put up a fight led by Joel with 21 points, and Jerry with 16 points. Patrick, Mailman and Abner each put up respectable numbers. Paul played a great game grabbing rebounds, distributing the ball and playing defense. He played  big. But not big enough for this night. Final score: Free Ballin 76 – 64 Morning Glory.

Z-TEAM VS. TEAM CALDWELL

Both teams a little short-handed but what a well played game! We dragged B Riley from his sick bed only to watch him go off for 34 points. Matt added 32 and Parker was back in action with 13. Luke also played a strong game finishing with 4. However, this wasn’t quite enough to overcome a 35 point 12 rebound outburst by JJ Frazier. Tall Paul also had a excellent game in the post with 26 points.  Hunter was just relentless on the offensive boards grabbing 10 rebounds to go with his 14 points. Lev, as usual, was solid with 12 points. The score went back and forth throughout the game with the margin never more than 5 points. In the end, the Caldwells were able to finish  on top. Final score: Team Caldwell 87 – 83 Z-Team.

Fall YMCA Basketball, Week 9

We have just finished the 9th week of the season. One more set of games next Wednesday, then we take a hiatus until the playoffs which begin on Wednesday, January 3rd.

FREE BALLIN VS. ROUGH AROUND THE EDGES

This was a very interesting game in that Free Ballin had EJ back but no Zack or Nick M. The Edges ran with just four for most of the night; fortunately one of them was Terrance. Free Ballin featured a multi-pronged attack led by Brandon who was both play maker and point-maker with 17 points and 7 assists. The bulk of the points came from EJ who is back from a sprained ankle. Nick P. added 13 including four treys, and Dereke phi slamma jamma-ed 3 times along the way to 12 points. Wil Blades added his trey.

Jeremy got shut out (for the first time). Felix downed a triple and one layup. Gabe added a 2. The Free Ballin defense managed to lock Terrance for only 59 points, six less than his last game versus Z-Team. Once again, it wasn’t quite enough. Free Ballin bounced into the 3rd seed in the playoffs with a 71-69 win.

TEAM CALDWELL VS. MORNING GLORY

The Caldwells continue to steamroller the league. This game was no exception. Led by AB with 40 points and JJ with 32, David Dean also had a good night with 22 points. Hunter was active in the paint to finish with 16. Lev added 7 for good measure.

The Glory were led by Joel who tied or set a new record for treys with 13 for the night, many of them contested and at least one banked in. He poured in 44 points. Abner also set a personal best with 33 points. Joe grabbed 13 rebounds to lead all players for the night. Patrick scored six but he also dished for 8 assists to go along with 5 more great passes that should have led to scores. Final score: Team Caldwell 117 – 89 Morning Glory. Team Caldwell will be the #1 seed for playoffs. Morning Glory will be the  #4 seed.

YMCA Fall Basketball, Week 8

It was another exciting night of YMCA basketball on Wednesday.

The first game pitted undefeated Team Caldwell versus a depleted Free Ballin squad. Stan scored the first 18 points for the Caldwells and finished with 25. He started with three uncontested treys from the wing that were nothing but net.  AB and JJ got in on the action with multiple threes and strong moves to the basket to compile 39 and 27 points respectively. David was all over the floor, literally, scrambling for loose balls and bumping into screens. He had 11 for the night.

Free Ballin had a hard time getting started, managing only 19 points in the first half. In the second half, Wil finally found his range and finished with 12 points for the night. Zack, who was obviously frustrated by the Caldwells’ defense and by his own team’s inability to “follow the play”, made a couple of treys in the second half. Nick and Mathew both had reasonably good games after building a wall of bricks in the first half. This was definitely one to put behind them. Final score: Team Caldwell 104 – 51 Free Ballin.

The second game featured Z-Team against a newly refurbished Rough Around the Edges team. This game included the return of Andrew and of Parker who has been on the DL all season. I ran into Parker at my physical therapy appointment at Kaiser. He said he was ready to jump back in.

The Zs started early with some sharp shooting by B. Riley, Andrew, Nyima and Matt. Nyima also put on a passing clinic while snatching some steals from the Edges Terrance Wiley. This was the key to running up a 48 – 38 halftime score.

In the second half, B. Riley just went off with long threes and some NBA-style finishes at the cup against Jeremy and company. He had a gaudy line for the night of 36 points and 14 rebounds. Matt found his stroke again to finish with 24 points. Andrew had a very solid game that included 18 points and 13 rebounds. Lucas put in some great minutes on defense and did hit a long three as well.

For the Edges, Jeremy put in his usual double double with 12 points and 13 bounds. Felix added 9 and 9. Angelo fought for 10 points, and Gabe hit a nice three. The story of the night, though, was the 65 points poured in by Terrance. It has been a while since the Y league has had a 60+ shooting night. The Z’s had built a comfortable 25 point lead in the second half only to watch Terrance stroke three after three.

This game reminded me of games of yore including double 50+ games by the Ballard brothers, a 70 point outburst by Paul Reiter, 66 points by Twan Hodges based on 22 threes, and 82 points by Herb Taylor. Yes, the Y was like the NBA in the Sixties and Seventies.

Final score: Z-Team 100 – 95 Rough Around the Edges.

Z-TEAM VS. FREE BALLIN

For Z-Team, Paul Reiter came out firing. He ripped the nets for four treys in the first half before finishing with 8 triples for the evening. B. Riley had it going as well. Free Ballin got pushed back on their heels by the Z-Team onslaught. EJ was the closest thing that Free Ballin had to an anti-Paul. He made some nice mid-range shots to complement his finishes around the basket to finish with 29 points. Big Zack also had a very nice game knocking down contested shots from around the key and strong moves to the cup to finish with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Free Ballin’s Brandon stepped it up in second half in pursuit of the Zs. But the Z-Team support squad was strong with B. Riley putting up 26 points and some stout defense against much taller competition. Matt made some key shots around the basket in the second half. Nyima also came alive in the second half with three triples and some beautiful passing to Luke, Matt and Paul. Final score: Z-Team 89 – 85 Free Ballin.

ROUGH AROUND THE EDGES VS. MORNING GLORY

For those of you who have been following the weekly progress of the league, you know that Jeremy and his Rough Around the Edges crew have been struggling. They have had a hard time keeping their roster together among other things. Morning Glory has been an up and comer with an excellent line up of post players, guards and rebounders. The Rough Edges made some key acquisitions to bolster their line up. Felix is a power player known for his strong drives to the hoop. Terrance Wiley is a YMCA legend who can put the ball in the cup from anywhere. With the addition of these two players, the Rough Edges found their way…in a big way.

Terrance danced his way through the defense while lighting them up for 28 points. Felix powered his way to 15 points and 9 rebounds including a rainbow three that almost hit the gym ceiling before dropping in.  Angelo also had a career night with 23 points. Morning Glory was sorely missing their big man, Evan, who was stuck in Davis. They struggled to score. Jerry was the one highlight with 15 points. Rough Edges finally made their way to the win column. With their revamped line up, they are now poised to make a run at a playoff spot. Final Score: Rough Around the Edges 83 – 38 Morning Glory.

YMCA 2017 Basketball, Week 6

We are officially into the second half of the season. Next week there are no games scheduled due to the Thanksgiving holiday. I did yoga today for the first time in six years. I am feeling, so balanced.

Z-TEAM VS. MORNING GLORY

Morning Glory is coming off a signature win last week against Free Ballin. Z-Team took a loss from Team Caldwell last week after a strong first half. The teams had exactly the same win/loss record. They were both playing for a strong seed in the playoffs. In the first half, the Z’s came out with an aggressively defensive posture that caught the Glories a little off their guard. Nyima and Lucas pressured the ball while Matt and Brandon locked down the middle. Brandon in particular slowed down the juggernaut known as Evan, limiting him to single digits for the first half. In a well balanced attack, all of the Z’s contributed buckets with Luke hitting a season high 12 points.  At the half, the Z’s had built up a 57 – 34 lead.

In the second half, the Glories were playing catch up the whole time. Evan stepped up his production in a serious way. Mailman, Jerry and Abner also chipped away at the score with nice mid-range shots. Still, Matt scorched the nets for 35, Brandon added 20, Nyima was everywhere in dropping in 30 and dropping some beautiful dimes to Matt, Brandon and Dexter. Final score: Z-Team 104 – 91 Morning Glory.

TEAM CALDWELL VS. ROUGH AROUND THE EDGES

The Rough Boys have had a tough time this season with player turnover and player absences. This night was no exception. Joel, Patrick and Nyima all stepped in to help. The Caldwells were also somewhat shorthanded but they did manage to field a complete team. The Roughies kept it close in the first half with new addition Kyle draining the cup for 17. Stan of the Caldwells was having none of it, though. He was feisty as well as effective collecting a technical foul to go with 42 points for the night. Tall Paul, taking another drink from the fountain of youth, had a very strong game, whipping through his post moves for a total of 20 for the night. Lev also showed off some offensive skills we haven’t seen in a while. He schooled the youngsters trying to guard him using his body to create space. He also did some nice look offs to shake defenders for an 18 point night. Final score: Team Caldwell 94 – 68 Rough Around the Edges.

Fall YMCA 2017 Basketball – Week 5

First, I want to thank Joel, Patrick and JJ for helping with the refereeing and score keeping this week. I am hoping that by next week, we will have a regular ref and two score keepers for the rest of the season. Now for the results.

FREE BALLIN VS. MORNING GLORY

Since adding big man, Evan, Morning Glory has become a new team. They now have a totally legit post player to round out their roster of shooters. And they made the first run of the night. Led by Joel in past games, this time it was Patrick, Abner and Paul who were knocking down the long ball while Evan was lunch pailing it in the paint.

Free Ballin had a hard time getting it out of first gear. Brandon was dishing but no one was finishing. Wil and Zack finally drove in for a couple of buckets down low. Nick was unusually quiet in this game. At one point the score was 25 – 8 in favor of Morning Glory. Free Ballin finally got a few things going with Wil and Dereke hitting treys. At the half it was Morning Glory 38 – 26 Free Ballin.

In the second half, Free Ballin came alive with Brandon taking the ball the hoop for some acrobatic layups and many trips to the foul line. Dereke acted as his side kick, taking passes and dunking with authority. Wil contributed a couple more threes while  Zack continued to finish well in the paint.

Morning Glory just never stopped. Mailman got into the act, as did Abner and Joe. Even Jerry sneaked in for a layup while none of the Ballin crew was looking. Evan continued his onslaught to give the Glory a comfortable lead throughout the game despite a late run by Free Ballin. Final: Morning Glory 74 – 69 Free Ballin.

Z-TEAM VS. TEAM CALDWELL

Team Caldwell has been dominating the league with a balanced attack featuring Stan, JJ and AB. This game was no exception. The only difference was that Tall Paul got in on the first half action with excellent shooting around the basket. Retooled Z-Team matched the Caldwells basket-for-basket in the first half. Paul Reiter got things started with a nice trey from the wing. He also held AB to 9 points for the half. Nyima put on another shooting display often started by a steal on the defensive side. Matt rang the three bell six times in the first half. New player, B Riley was also effective around the basket. At the half it was Team Caldwell 64 – 58 Z-Team.

The second half was a different story. AB upped his game and David Dean also added some scoring punch. The Z-Team defense started to break down as Stan released early numerous times for easy, uncontested layups. For the Z’s, Lucas put in some good minutes especially on defense where they sorely needed it. Paul Reiter switched with Nyima to handle Stan. It was a good switch though not enough to staunch the bleeding. In the end, Team Caldwell prevailed, 124 – 97.

ROUGH AROUND THE EDGES VS. FREE BALLIN

A surging Rough Edges squad showed off some new players and new fire power against league powerhouse Free Ballin. John and Arman of the Edges set the tone early with strong drives to the hoop, often taking their defenders with them. They also rebounded well, especially on the offensive side. Jeremy added his sharp shooting with three treys in the first half. Travis got into the mix with rebounds and aggressive defense against the Free Ballin guards to go with 4 points. Gabe Sunshine moved the ball well and knocked down a trey of his own.

Free Ballin came into the game a little short-handed, missing Zack and Kenny, but not enough to slow them down, especially E.J. Ahanotu who was everywhere. He rang up 36 points to go with 19 rebounds! Dereke Bell shared the rebounding load and also threw down a nasty, highlight reel dunk.  Brandon played his usual crafty game with deft moves around his defenders and over the hands of the tall boys down low. He also drew several fouls and converted from the charity stripe. Nick drove to the cup consistently resulting in 14 points. Wil Blades, to show he is no flash-in-the-pan, called his own number twice for long range torpedoes from behind the three-line. The Edges kept it close through the first half but Free Ballin kept the game in hand  throughout the second half. Final score: Free Ballin 84 – 75 Rough Around the Edges.

MORNING GLORY VS. TEAM CALDWELL

Morning Glory took on league leaders Team Caldwell in the second match of the night. Morning Glory improves with each game. This was no exception. They have added big man, Evan, who was a force in the paint. He fearlessly went straight up against Stan and JJ of the Caldwells, showing a nice touch around the basket to finish with 23 points and 10 strong rebounds. The Caldwells decided to apply ball pressure in the first half to see if the Morning Glories would wilt. They didn’t. Abner, in particular, showed off some flashy handles and a nice stroke from both the three-line and the mid-range. He finished with 22  points. The other offensive weapon for the Glories is Joel who managed to find just enough room to get his shot off against the bigger, more athletic Caldwells to finish with team high 25 points. Patrick found his shot in this game knocking down four treys to keep the game close. Joe kept up his steady game around the basket opportunistically laying it up after a nifty pass from Abner.

Mailman subtly directed the Morning Glory squad from the sidelines with some timely personnel moves throughout the game that were Don Nelson-like in their unpredictability.

The Caldwells put on their usual show of force led by AB who put up another exceptional game with 40 points and 8 rebounds. Every time the Glories made a run, AB was there to hit a key shot to keep them at bay. Stan, JJ, David and Lev each contributed points in double figures for a very balanced attack. Hunter also scored 6 in limited minutes for the Caldwells. Final score: Team Caldwell 97 – 86 Morning Glory.
