Z-TEAM vs. ROUGH AROUND THE EDGES

A retooled Z-Team took on an also retooled Rough Around the Edges team led by Jeremy Engleman. Judging from the results, it appears that Z-Team picked the right new tools for the job.

Z-Team’s Nyma ripped the nets for 50 points including eight treys. Short, fast and accurate, he will be one to watch this season. It was fun to watch him attack the basket as well. His first three lay up attempts were blocked by Jeremy and Angelo. Then he adjusted the height of the bank of his shot to devastating effect. Matthew, also a new pick up, knocked down six treys to go with some nice finishes around the basket. Andrew played his usual solid game grabbing 10 rebounds in addition to 29 points. Lucas, the final new tool, also put in very solid minutes on defense to compliment his 8 points. Paul put up 18 points to go with three blocks and 6 rebounds in limited minutes.

Rough Around the Edges kind of lived up to their name in this game. While their new players were quite good, they haven’t yet gelled. Randy Wilson, formerly of Z-Team played an excellent game grabbing 11 rebounds while dropping in 19 points. Young Angelo scored 17 points. Gabe Sunshine, who had a stand out game last week, cooled down a bit in the game to finish with 5 points. Tristan put up some stout defense, as did Travis, but the team they were guarding was on fire. Final score: Z-Team 136 – 77 Rough Around the Edges.

TEAM CALDWELL vs FREE BALLIN

The two titans of the league, Free Ballin and Team Caldwell, squared off for the marque game of the night.  Both were undefeated coming into the match. Both are loaded with talent. Team Caldwell struck first with some nice inside moves by Stan, JJ and AB. Free Ballin finally got going after a few minutes with some nice outside shooting by Kenny and midrange missiles by EJ. Nick got in on the action as well with his now patented swoops to the basket.

This game was about defense, though. Both teams ratcheted up their defense which kept the score low. Kenny and AB went at it. Stan and Tall Paul were countered by Dereke, EJ and Zack. Brandon and JJ fought each other to a draw.  The score was 25 – 24 score at the end of the first 20 minutes.

In the second half, Brandon really put Free Ballin on his shoulders with dead-eye shooting from outside and some very tasty fakes that got his man out of position so he could thread through the rest of the defense for contested shots at the cup. He made most of them. The ones he missed resulted in trips to the charity stripe where he converted all but one which saw nothing but air. The score wagged back and forth until it looked like Free Ballin had the advantage as the game would down to the final two minutes. Team Caldwell found just enough to keep it tied at the buzzer 62 – 62.

The overtime was all AB who was money from the free throw line.  Final score: Team Caldwell 75 – 68 Free Ballin.
